The Art of Tea and Poetry

The Art of Tea and Poetry

Das Martinskloster

Our lives are rivers
on which we travel
unaware of our route
determined by riverbanks
unaware that where we
are at any given moment
results from tributaries
flowing, forming the current
on which we are borne
guiding us to places
we never imagined.

II
One for me was the Moselle
meandering between vineyards
brought by the legions
sloping up steep hills
looming above red-roofed towns.

At a bend outside of the city
stands the Martinskloster
once for monks, now for students,
then also for a restaurant,
my home for a distant summer.
days spent high across the river
pursuing learning I did not love
hoping for career success
along another river
among bureaucrats and clerks
and GS-ratings certainly
not my destiny but then
the veil was not drawn back
because I could not bear
could not believe
what lay before me.

Nights spent with Römer Pils
and mini-kettles of goulash
prepared by fellow Magyar,
lingering after closing,
loving or attempting to love
locals and sojourners
as we roamed river parks
and winding streets.
Beneath ancient buildings.

III
A decade later
on a wintry New Jersey afternoon
in new Battle Dress Uniform
learning how Martin’s mantle
lent its name and dignity to
who I had become.
In a flash comprehending that
the Moselle had borne me this far
as it had Martin and
the same waters took us
to our destinations.
Some of the waters
flowed with me toward
the river on which I float today
